Chiropractic and Sleep

We have many patients that overwork themselves, explaining that they have no time to sleep. I understand that it is hard to get an adequate amount of sleep each night, especially in today’s society, but I also do not think people understand the importance of sleep.

Our bodies were made to have a resting period to help heal and recuperate. With the increase demand in work and fast pace lift styles we all live, many people choose to focus on other activities and sleep gets compromised.

In our office, we see many acute accidents and injuries. One of the questions we always ask about is how do you sleep in terms of quality of sleep, sleep positions and the amount of time you sleep. This is because sleep is one of the most important aspects to health and healing. Research has suggested that inadequate sleep has a powerful influence on the risk of infectious disease, the occurrence and progression of major medical illnesses such as cardiovascular disease and cancer, the incidence of depression, pro inflammatory immune response and wound healing.

Yes, chiropractic care is beneficial in improving health and healing, but with inadequate sleep, there is a constant battle that many people do not realize their bodies are continuing to fight. Think about it, would you show up to a battle with a weak frontline that has been taking abuse over and over again? Then why would you expect your body to magically heal itself from an acute injury like the ones seen in our office, without adequate self care and rest? Many acute injuries that we see in our office are due to an inflammatory response, and as much as chiropractic care can help to decrease symptoms, we need to provide adequate care at home. Improving sleeping routines, positions and hours.

If amount of sleep is not your concern, but quality of sleep is, we are here to help! How can chiropractic care help with sleep you ask? Chiropractic care works to alleviate you discomfort that may be disturbing your sleep, allowing you to get more shut- eye. Often times small modifications to the sleeping arrangements can also benefit form better sleeping biomechanics. If it isn't the pain that is disrupting your sleep, chiropractic care may still work to improve your sleep! It works to increase blood flow throughout the body, which in turn improves relaxation and circulation. If we are working to decrease your pain while improving sleep, then we are making the health and healing process better overall!

We are educated in how to assess what may be causing your baby not to sleep much during the night whether it be discomforts from misalignments or if babies regulatory processes are being interrupted. After all, one of our favorite things to hear is a happy mom who brings her baby in with a smile on their faces because they are both sleeping better throughout the night!
